The four cardinal heroes are a group of ordinary men from contemporary Japan summoned to the kingdom of Millromark to become their savior. Melromarc is a country plagued by the waves of disaster that have repeatedly destroyed the Earth and caused disaster for its citizens for centuries. The four heroes give the sword, spears, bow and shield respectively to conquer these waves. Naofumi Iwataani, an otaku, became the curse of being the "shield hero". Armed with a gradual shield, Naoufumi is mocked and ridiculed by his fellow heroes and the people of the Kingdom for his weak offensive abilities and weak personality.
When the heroes are supplied with the resources and comrades they train with, Naofumi starts off with the only person who is ready to train next to him, Malty Melromarc. He was quickly betrayed by her and falsely accused of taking advantage of them. After that, Naufumi becomes very discriminated against and hated by the people of Milromark because of something he did not do. With a raging storm of hurt and distrust in his heart, Naofumi begins his journey to strengthen himself and his reputation. Moreover, however, the difficulty of being in his own collections, so Naofumi buys a demi-human slave on the verge of death called Raphtalia to accompany him on his travels.
With the waves approaching from the kingdom, Naufumi and Rapthalia must fight for the survival of the kingdom and the protection of the people of Mellromark from their bad future.
